The Legacy Project
Celebrating 38 years of Spanish Music Discovery and Performance
In recent years, ONS has taken a renewed interest in the preservation of the legacy of the little-known works from which our repertoire is based and our mission is founded. The Legacy Project was created to ensure continued public knowledge and access to the unique cultural and artistic experiences we have offered in the US and abroad for four decades. This summer ONS staff will be publishing and updating our catalogue of performances to bring a new light to Spanish and Latin history, and beauty and influence on the art of today.
As an ensemble, we are continuously excited by the pieces, composers, and stories that were rediscovered by Artistic Director Grover Wilkins 3d in Spain. We hope this project will inspire listeners like you to continue exploring the Latin diaspora alongside the Orchestra of New Spain for years to come.
Browse our library of little-known works below, and stay tuned as music will be added daily!

Madrid 1752 | Sacred Music from the Royal Chapel of Spain
Born of Maestro Grover Wilkin's research, Madrid 1752 presents a modern introduction to the choral masterworks of the two principal composers for the Spanish Royal Court in the mid-18th century. Francisco Courcelle and José de Nebra must be considered for the original and unique musical styles they embody, apart from any influences that we may later find in subsequent generations.
"Nebra’s [Matins music is] spiced with harmonies pointing toward early classicism. Courcelle’s Epiphany responsories are more flamboyant and more elaborately textured. All the music is dramatic in impact... and quite beautiful."

Masses for Celebration | Francisco Courcelle
Fruit of 20 years of research by conductor Grover Wilkins, you will hear works from Courcelle which mark a time of courtly and public music the equal of other European musical centers. The hand of Courcelle is distinctive offering works of surprising intensity and creativity.
